    Jessica Tobian - Saxophone- Teaches beg and Int students

    Jessica Tobian has been playing the saxophone for over nine years. She is currently a music performance major at BYU and has studied with the nationaly recognized saxophone expert Dr. Ray Smith for the past several years. Jessica has performed with some of the worlds best artist including, Bob Mintzer, Eric Marienthol, Ron Blake, Jeff Coffin and more.  She has experience in a large variety of styles, including classical, jazz, latin, rock/pop, dixieland and is offering lessons in soprano, alto, tenor and bari saxophone.  Jessica's positive approach to teaching focuses on fundamentals that will help the student progress while keeping lessons fun and enjoyable.

     

     

     

    David Kjar- Saxophone/Clarinet - Teaches beg, int, and advanced students

    David Kjar is a freelance musician and educator specializing in Saxophone, Clarinet, and flute. David is fluent in both Classical and Jazz. He has won many awards including 1st place Jazz Clarinet at the Moscow Jazz Festival, as well as 1st place reed player at the Sacramento Jazz Festival. David played both lead alto and lead tenor in BYU's Synthesis, lead alto in the Crescent Super band, as well as lead alto in the all-state jazz band. His classical experience has included the BYU philharmonic and chamber Orchestras, principle alto saxophone in the BYU wind symphony, and principle clarinet in the Utah Youth Symphony. He has studied with Ray Smith, Daron Bradford, Kathy Pope, Jaren Hinckley. Although he has always emphasized performance, David chose to pursue music education as his official degree at BYU.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Derek Crane - Saxophones, Flutes, and Clarinets - Beginning-advanced elementary, middle, and high school students, All levels of adults.

    Derek Crane, a Jazz/Woodwind Performance at Brigham Young University, has been playing for seven years and professionally performing since the age of 13. He currently plays eleven woodwinds (inclusive of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, flute, piccolo, Eb, Bb/A, and bass clarinets, and bassoon) and plays in BYU Synthesis, Principal Bass Clarinet in Wind Symphony, and holds the Saxophone chair the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band. Professionally, he has performed at major venues all around the world, including Montreux, Switzerland Jazz Festival, headlined the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival and Telluride, Colorado Jazz Festival, was honored as a State Finalist in Music for Sterling Scholar, as well as many other accolades.

    As a teacher, his approach is rooted in both classical and jazz study. Students will learn a strong foundation in sight-reading, technique, ear training, improvising, and other techniques from a performance in a side-by-side lesson (which is more based on professional experience) as opposed to merely passing off etudes in a book and being left to the real world by themselves.
